Maidenhead & District Stroke Club
Our Objectives
To improve the quality of like of people who have had a stroke.
To provide social and recreational activities for members.
To promote and maintain contact and co-operation with persons and organisations having an interest in our
members.
Our Club
Our club was formed almost 20 years ago to help people who have had a stroke. Our 50-strong membership is more or less equally divided between men and women. We have adult members of every age and from every walk of life, some in wheelchairs all or some of the
time, others use walking aids, some have restricted use of an arm - but they all have one thing in common - they make every
effort to live their lives to the full.
At the Club we try to help our members to re-establish themselves in a social situation and to make use
of the abilities they have. We organise board games, quizzes, and more sometimes
more physical pursuits such as indoor hockey (played from a seated position!), indoor bowls (played with lighter bowls), table
tennis and sometimes exercises to music. We try to vary our activities and this has included Boat Trips, trips to Garden Centres,
Pub Lunches, Bacon Roll mornings and crafts.
However, we usually start our fortnightly meetings with coffee/tea and biscuits and lots of chat and catching
up on each other’s news. Those members with speech difficulties seem to
manage to communicate very well owing to the fact that so many members have experienced the same difficulties, and can encourage
others to make the effort and not to feel embarrassed.
Thanks to the generosity of WAMDSAD** we hold our meetings in their purpose built premises and use their
facilities. The atmosphere is of one large happy family with one aim in view
- to help improve the lot of every member and for them to enjoy themselves.
We arrange and subsidise transport where necessary with the help of People to Places, Maidenhead Care and
The Volunteer Bureau.
Our funds are raised by holding Summer raffles and a Christmas Fair each year, the latter involving a raffle
with significant prizes - and in this way we hope to raise enough money to fund several outings and our Grand Christmas Party.
We also rely on donations from the local community to run our activities and ensure the club can continue to run.
Run by a committee and dedicated volunteers, we work hard to further our Stroke Club’s objectives
with our members.
